When I was growing up my family had a 1986 VW Camper weekender edition. I have many great memories of this car and it came with me to college. It was with great regret that I let it go before I got married. It needed more care than I was able to give it. After I had kids of my own, I wished I had somehow kept that camper.

In 2012 a singular set of circumstances provided a unique opportunity to purchase a near mint condition (no winters) 1986 VW Camper weekender edition almost just like the one I had growing up. It was a different color and has some additional options but was otherwise the same car I had. I jumped on it.

It's a 28-year-old car. There's no getting around that fact. I've replaced fuel lines (just in case), brakes, shocks, fuel injectors, water pump, a cooling line and the clutch slave cylinder. I hit a deer with it on our first trip in 2013, which led mainly to just body work. We've also had some great camp-outs in it. It's such a unique vehicle and really stands out at a campground among all those huge RVs. It's great to have it again and it's a great car to work on. It's from the era of good cars that have a lot of user serviceable parts. We still put it up for the winters to try to keep it in the best condition possible.
